The RMSO has been implemented in the Swan-Canning River System with sponsorship and donations from individuals, The University of Western Australia and the Water Corporation. The project is been undertaken in collaboration with Millennium Kids Inc., the Department of Health, Department of Water, Water Corporation and Local Government Councils.

Using instrumentation and software developed at the Centre for Water Research the project aims to present a simple strategy for reversing the current degradation of the Swan-Canning River Basin by setting up a modern adaptive management system that will allow the Swan-Canning River Basin and its receiving waters to be managed sustainably for the benefit of the Western Australian community. "Our River" will become a barometer to the sustainable agricultural and industrial practices within the catchment. The expertise, hardware and software have been wholly developed at the Centre for Water Research is in use in 20 countries around the world in Lake Iseo, Italy, Lake Monger, Australia, Rio De La Plata - Argentina, Sydney Catchment Authority Reservior, Australia and Melbourne Water.

There are two components to the project.

Firstly, the scientific component is aimed at improving the water quality and managing the in the Swan Canning River Basin so that all West Australians can continue to enjoy the river well into the future. The RMSO website contains information collected by various CWR instruments located in the river basin, the Health Department, the Water Corporation, the Department of Water and Local Councils. It’s the first time all this information has been incorporated into one site thus enabling a wholistic understanding of how inputs from various sources impact on the health of the Swan-Canning River Basin.

The second component of the project is engagement with the community. Our aim is to inform and engage the public in the care of the Swan-Canning River system. In order to do this we have developed an easy to use interactive publicly available website and engaged schools and community groups to become active participants in the project. The schools program is run in partnership with Millennium Kids.

CWR and Millennium Kids Inc sees this river sustainability partnership as a potential vehicle to bring together a number of youth driven environmental education initiatives. This project is used to connect school communities to their natural environment, introduce them to new technology that enhances learning and seeks their partnership as observers and contributors to the larger sustainable debate.

We need to raise more funds to be able to continue this vital work.
